An Invitation

October 11, 2018

I’m a Democrat, and I will tell you why.

I invite someone to write a letter about why you’re a Republican. Then perhaps, we and those like us can talk publicly in a spirit of mutual respect – not trying to convince each other. But maybe we’ll glimpse each other’s humanity and see each other as real flesh and blood neighbors rather than paper-doll enemies.

The Democratic party stands for the values taught me by my parents, my Christian faith and my evolving sense of our common humanity and our common good. I cherish values of justice, kindness and courage.

As a Democrat and Christian, I believe that following Jesus means helping shape our common good. It means working for human rights; for economic fairness and justice; for gender and sexual justice; for justice for African Americans, Latinos and other people of color; for solidarity with immigrants and refugees; for respect of Jews, Muslims, pagans and people of any religion that teaches kindness and justice; for people with special needs; for those who are sick, lonely or abused; and for the well-being of our earth.

I’ve always had access to healthy food and clean water, safe housing, good schools, and adequate health care — thanks to the labor of countless hardworking Americans and others. I realize I’m a product of the contributions of countless people who have enabled me to grow, thrive and enjoy my personal freedom, limited only by the social and legal expectation that I will not harm others.

As a Democrat, I believe these same goods — food and water, housing, education, health care and legal protections from harm – constitute our common good and, as such, belong to us all. I believe our federal, state and local governments share major responsibilities in shaping and sustaining our common good. I believe it’s right and fair that I pay taxes to help build this good society.

I’ve never been prouder to be a member of the Democratic Party. Will someone tell me now why you are a Republican?
