U.S. Is On The Wrong Path

October 25, 2018

Adolph Hitler first proposed “the big lie” as propaganda in 1925 and incorporated it into his rules for political behavior: “never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Obviously, Donald Trump is not Hitler nor his political party the Nazi Party. But there are uncomfortable parallels. Trump lies repeatedly, keeps his “base” (and the public) in a constant state of agitation, has promoted violence, never apologizes, never accepts responsibility or blame, and attacks any who do not swear loyalty to him.

In his efforts to hide the truth, Trump attacks and denigrates those agencies and institutions usually considered factual: the free press, the judiciary, and government agencies on which we rely for factual analysis (e.g. the intelligence community, CDC, EPA, FBI). Trump dismisses any contradiction as “fake news.”

As was the case for Hitler in pre-war Germany, Trump is enabled by his political party. Majority Leader McConnell appears willing to do whatever necessary to take power, whether by obstruction to President Obama exercising his constitutional responsibility or by overturning the rules for judicial appointments. And Republican majority state legislatures make a concerted effort to disenfranchise those who might not vote for a Republican.

Race identity, race prejudice and tribalism were hallmarks of Nazi Germany and have become hallmarks of the politics of Donald Trump and his enablers in government. They have polarized our citizenry and have undermined respect for our democratic institutions and our democracy.

Without correction our country will continue on a path that leads to an authoritarian government. This mid-term election is our opportunity to vote for a different path for our country!
