Mushroom Expert Will Talk At Hendersonville Green Drinks

November 5, 2018

On Thursday, Nov. 8, Hendersonville Green Drinks will welcome Greg Carter, a local mushroom expert to Black Bear Coffee on North Main Street in Hendersonville. Carter has been cultivating a variety of mushrooms since 1999. After founding his own mushroom farm called Deep Woods Mushrooms in 2006, he began offering workshops to teach others how to grow their own mushrooms. In his talk, Carter will be sharing the basics of identifying and collecting wild mushrooms, as well as tips for growing your own mushrooms at home.

In 1999, Carter learned how to inoculate oak logs with Shiitake spawn in an effort to make Christmas gifts to family and friends. Several years of education, research and work, and several hundred shiitake logs later, his hobby “mushroomed” into a business. Carter opened his farm, Deep Woods Mushrooms, in 2006. His mushroom hobby fueled his passion to educate others on the medicinal properties of mushrooms and to encourage them to grow their own edible mushrooms on the hardwood logs of the Southern Appalachia. Carter now cultivates several varieties of edible and medicinal mushrooms, holds educational workshops and hunt classes, schedules farm tours and inoculation clinics, and offers dinners cooked in his wood-fired pizza oven. You can find him at http://www.deep woodsmushrooms.net and on Facebook.

Carter will hold his presentation at 6 p.m. on Nov 8.
