Attend Railroad Depot Public Hearing

November 12, 2018

At the recent city council planning department retreat held at the Cradle of Forestry, a topic of discussion was the Railroad Avenue depot project. Some of the reasons put forth in support of the depot are to provide an event space and public restrooms along the multi-use path. The needs for such amenities in that location are questionable.

A better use of the depot funds would be to complete the multi-use path to the Mary C. Jenkins Community Center, a newly acquired city property. Slated to be rebuilt as a city-owned community center, the Mary C. Jenkins facility will include event space and public restrooms. Current plans call for portable toilets at the neighboring Tannery skate park soon to be constructed. Perhaps permanent public restrooms would be better utilized. Extending the multi-use path to Tannery Park and Mary C. Jenkins encourages all citizens to use and appreciate the new construction in the Rosenwald community.

I encourage all community members to be present and provide input concerning the Railroad Avenue Depot Project at the public hearing on Nov. 13, from 3-6 p.m. at 150 South Gaston St.
