Ignoring Trump's Offenses

January 7, 2019

Last this week, for the second time in a month, American troops fired tear gas across our border into a foreign country, Mexico. Their target? Defenseless civilians, including children.

It is but the latest example of the depths into which our country is sinking, conjuring images of Nazi Germany. Trump’s rhetoric about Mexicans echoes Hitler’s rhetoric about the Jews. In Tornillo, Texas, children who have been torn from their parents are confined in a camp.

At the same time, Trump has shut down the government, demanding a border wall. Every expert, and the majority of the American people, know that such a wall will do little to secure our border and that there are far more effective ways to do so.

Despite this, and a long list of other serious offenses, including repeated violations of federal law, the Republican leadership — and a large percentage of the rank and file—cheer him on or remain silent. In doing so, they become every bit as complicit in this evil as Trump himself. As a nation, we are moving toward becoming the very evil so many gave their lives to defeat in wars past.

When will it end? Only when enough people stand up and demand that it end. The following statement by Haile Selassie makes this clear: “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”
