Ellis Island Vs. The Border

My Jewish (Christian) wife’s Russian grandparents, fleeing the pogroms, came through the immigration gateway at Ellis Island, N.Y., as did my Irish grandmother and Bavarian grandfather. They complied with all the regulations, paperwork, medical exams and citizenship /education classes then required. Some spoke little English.

They all became proud citizens and founded pretty successful families. I often watched my dear friend Chief Judge Sirica swear in hundreds of new citizens after their five year pathway to citizenship. He always teared up when he told them of his Italian–born paren...
