Initially, Trump’s promise of a wall on the Mexican border seemed entirely symbolic — of his widely dispersed vitriol against all manner of perceived enemies — Muslims, darker-skinned people, the press, the poor, women, etc. And as a symbol of bigotry, it served its purpose for him, gathering out of the crowd of anxious and vulnerable Americans a movement. The wall was a symbol of hatred of the strange, the primordial Other — hyped up and magnified on the screen of American imagination.
