Z. Cecil Smathers

Z. Cecil Smathers, 96, of Pisgah Forest, passed away peacefully Jan. 11, 2019, at Greenville Memorial Hospital, while surrounded by his immediate family.

A native of Haywood County, N.C., he was the son of the late John Bascombe and Anne Lawrence Smathers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Maye Smathers.

A graduate of Brevard College, he enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After his military service, he worked at Olin Chemical Corporation in Brevard until his retirement.

He attended and was a founding member of Temple Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest.

His survivors include his son, Roger Keith Smathers, and wife, Sharon P. Smathers, of Taylors, S.C .; grandson, Ian Keith Smathers, and wife, Katy, also of Taylors; granddaughter, Amber "Brook" Smathers, of Asheville; and great-grandchildren, Alyanna Lollis, of Charleston, S.C., and Hunter and Keegan Smathers, of Taylors.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, in the chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations, with Rev. Paul Smith officiating.

Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with military rites performed by the Transylvania County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m., one hour prior to the service.
