AAUW Yellow Boxes Ready For Used Book Donations

Last updated 2/4/2019 at 1:43pm

AAUW yellow boxes are back. Look for them in convenient locations throughout Brevard and surrounding communities.

For the 50th year, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is asking for donations of used books to raise money at its annual book sale to fund educational scholarships and support local young women. Each year scholarships are given to Transylvania County women to attend Brevard College and Blue Ridge Community College and to local elementary and middle school girls to attend science and technology camps at Green River Preserve and the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program at Clemson University.

The 2019 book sale will open on Saturday, June 15, to a rush of book lovers and collectors and will run through Thursday, June 20, at the Boshamer Gymnasium on the Brevard College campus. It is the culmination of a year’s effort by AAUW member volunteers to collect, sort, price, pack and then unpack and display thousands of donated books.

Brevard branch members volunteer hundreds of hours getting ready for the annual sale. It is the primary fundraising activity of the branch and has been recognized at the state level of AAUW for its spectacular fundraising success.

The yellow boxes are the primary means for collecting donated books. But, AAUW wants everyone to be considerate of the businesses that are volunteering their facilities for the yellow boxes. Use the yellow boxes when you have no more than a bag or small box of books to donate. When you have more than that, contact Kristen Alpert at (203) 913-6935 or kristen.alpert@gmail.com. She will either arrange to have someone come to your home to pick up your books or arrange a time when you can drop off the books at AAUW’s new Book Nook location downtown. Rather than lugging all your books into Ingles or some other location, AAUW members will have a dolly at your car to unload your books.

Yellow boxes have been delivered to the locations listed below. If any other organizations or businesses would like to be included as a book collection site, call (516) 818-7366 or (828) 884-9179. AAUW thanks these establishments for their continued generosity and support of the book sale.
