Heritage Museum Launches 'History-In-A-Box' Lessons

Heritage Museum "History-in-a-Box" lessons introduce students to prominent African Americans of Brevard like Jim Aiken.

The Transylvania Heritage Museum is partnering with schools across the county to offer students a glimpse into Brevard's rich multi-cultural history. In honor of Black History Month, the museum has launched three new "History-in-a-Box" lessons for teachers to use in classrooms to introduce students to people who once lived here, people like Jim Aiken.

Aiken was one of Brevard's most respected merchants, despite his mixed race. He operated a café, barber shop and general store in downtown Brevard in the 1890s, a time when most blacks were not even permitted to enter the same shops as white...
