Sometimes, the strangest bit of inspiration can turn into a newfound passion.

For Barbara Conley, a December snowstorm and the discovery of an artistic medium descended from the era of slavery, helped invigorate her passion for quilt-making while also stirring a cultural and historic sense of pride – just in time for Black History Month.

Conley, 65, serves as the circulation manager for The Transylvania Times.

That typically means a day of fielding phone calls and handling the front office, but when Transylvania County was pounded with nearly a foot of snow in December, Conley's hands...
