Guest Column: Closing Gun Sales Loopholes

Gun violence is considered a public health crisis in the U.S. The good news is that gun laws, when enforced, save lives.

Currently there is a gap in federal law that allows gun sales without background checks when purchased from unlicensed sellers such as at gun shows and online. In January 2019, Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced legislation, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. Passage of H.R. 8 would require background checks for all gun sales, including guns purchased at gun shows and online.
