Lake Toxaway Center Project

The Lake Toxaway Community Club has devoted one entire 70-foot wall of the community center building to honor the veterans of upper Transylvania County. As the word of this veteran’s photo wall has spread throughout the community and county, the interest in veterans has grown with the present generation. Each Memorial Day and Veterans Day the Lake Toxaway Community Club presents a special program of recognition for our veterans.

For the 2019 special veteran days, the club is planning a very special program to honor all Transylvania military personnel who have lost their lives while serving on active duty, not just war related deaths. The military memorial that stands on the Courthouse lawn has 77 names of military personnel who gave their lives from World War I through the War on Terrorism. Now, the challenge is to find the information about individuals who perished while on active duty during non-hostile times. These deaths could be the result of illness, training accidents, automobile accidents, murder, homicides, etc. The goal is to reach out to every community and community clubs to assist in identifying this group of forgotten military personnel.

The goal is not only to present a very special program to the public but to also provide a written record of each individual that sacrificed his life for our freedom. They will be providing the actual newspaper accounts of each individual just as it appeared in the Brevard News (World War I), The Transylvania Times and the Asheville Citizen-Times. They will extract the information that is pertinent to the individual and give the newspaper name and the date it appeared.
