Paula Marion Thomas died at Bonview Rehabilitation and Healthcare, in Richmond, Va., March 18, 2019.

Born Aug. 8, 1941, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., she was the daughter of William Paul and Elizabeth Smith Thomas.

She attended Tuscaloosa’s city schools and the University of Alabama, graduating with a B.S. and later an M.S. in chemistry, distinguished for having been one of the first women to earn a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry.

She was active in the East Grand Rapids, Mich., Junior League and also taught computer science at Aquinas College.
