Guest Column: Time To Address Stigma

I didn’t grow up in North Carolina. Instead, I spent an important part of my formative years in Georgia, where I heard about Milledgeville, the former state mental hospital. Today, it stands as a stark reminder of its role as a warehouse for the mentally ill.

It’s now quiet and deserted but still looms and threatens as it once did for 15,000 troubled souls. The huge kitchen was actually a tourist attraction at one time. Stigma ruled the day, and patients were told they had no role on earth anymore.

Parents (not mine!) threatened their children with a trip to Milledgeville if they did...
