"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free" Frederick Douglas, a freed black man and abolitionist leader in early 19th century passionately testified.

This quotation is on Brevard College's Elementary Reading Methods' syllabus as a reminder of the power of literacy. The correlation between freedom and ability to read remains a sobering reality.

Today, more than 42 percent of North Carolina's fourth graders score below proficiency in reading assessments.
