In April 2009, Martha Carlton opened the doors to Theophilus in downtown Brevard. Her husband, Greg, had been relocated from Northern Michigan to western North Carolina to lead the development of Young Life's Carolina Point. Martha had owned a shop in Michigan for five years, and with the encouragement of her husband, decided to move the operation south. Despite the economic downturn at the time, she saw a niche in the downtown community that needed to be filled, according to a press release.
