Well-known local author Megan Shepherd can usually get her rescue dog, Bascom, to calm back down if he makes a ruckus in the pre-dawn hours when everyone is still asleep in their Etowah home.
But on that morning in September 2018, Bascom wouldn't give up.
"It was little after 3 a.m.," she said. "I can usually get him to jump back in the bed and go to sleep, but this time, he wouldn't listen."
He paced in and out of the bedroom, as if trying to lead her, she said.
"So, I followed him to the nursery, and there I saw the scariest thing I had ever seen in my life," she said.
