A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for the new concert hall.

On Friday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Parker Concert Hall at the Brevard Music Center.

The indoor concert hall on the lake is scheduled to open in summer 2020 with a seating capacity of 400.

The hall accommodates concerts with state-of-the-art acoustics, but with its retractable modular seating system, the space can be used for parties and community events as well. The new Parker Concert Hall will be the home of piano, chamber, classical guitar and jazz programming.

Parker Concert Hall is being called the most important project in 50 years on the Brevard Music Center campus by folks like architect Parker Platt, who drafted his first college project for the campus and who designed the new concert hall.

Platt said it has been an honor to work with Brevard Music Center for most of his life.

"My father and business partner, Al Platt, both designed and constructed his first BMC building over 40 years ago, and Platt Architecture has been a collaborative partner on projects of all sizes ever since," Platt said. "All of us at Platt Architecture have worked diligently to design a structure that will seamlessly blend into Brevard Music Center's casual and natural camp-style setting while creating dramatic views to the lake...or to center stage." said Platt.

The hall has a ticket price of $6 million and is the first new performance space since the Whittington-Phofl auditorium was built, and is the first year-round venue for the campus.

Transylvania County Commissioner Mike Hawkins was at the groundbreaking ceremony and said the space was a welcome addition to the community.

"Brevard Music Center's new concert hall will be a tremendous asset to Transylvania County as both a performance space and community-builder," Hawkins said. "I applaud the music center for its vision and its ongoing dedication to providing yet another welcoming space to local nonprofits and organizations like United Way, the Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club, Rise & Shine and so many others – who share a mutual commitment to making Brevard a better place to live and work."

Opening night for the 2019 season is Friday, June 21, with an all Tchaikovsky concert-featuring violinist Chee Yun.

JoAnn Falletta will conduct selections from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 5.
