Master Gardener: Legumes - Good For You; Good For Your Garden, Too

What exactly is a legume? Basically, it is any kind of bean: fresh snap green beans, lima beans, all kinds of dried, shelled beans, such as kidney or pinto beans for chili, navy or great northern beans for soup; garbanzo beans for hummus. Also included in the legume family are all kinds of peas: fresh English garden peas, dried split peas, sugar snap peas and black-eyed peas. Lentils and peanuts are two more legumes.
