Give 5 Read 5

At Rosman Elementary School we are once again collecting new or gently used books for our sixth annual Give 5 Read 5 book giveaway. Our hope is that each RES child will be able to take home at least five books to add to their personal libraries this year. Contact Crystal Whitman (RES instructional coach) at 862-4431 or email her at cwhitman@tcsnc.org for more information or to arrange for book pick-up. The collection goes until May 31.

Gordon Hardin Cathey's Creek Neighbor

Adventurer, storekeeper, truck driver, Gordon wore many hats. He was born in Transylvania County on July 25, 1909, to Minor D and Elsie R. Hardin. His father was a teacher and moved around the country. While in California, Gordon's mother, Elsie, passed away in January 1927. Gordon worked as a wheat harvester, well digger, crewman on Great Lakes ships, factory worker, farming and as a long-distance truck driver, which he did some after he built Hardin's Grocery and Feed Store, which he owned and operated. He married Mary Morgan in January 1946, raised a family and had many friends. He died Oct. 22, 2001, and is buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery in the Calvert community.

The Window

After tornado warnings, high winds and heavy rain this past Sunday, the next day, Monday, was beautiful. The sun was shining brightly, the sky a clear blue and the mountains with fresh spring green trees were visible. The ornamental tree in my yard has lost all its blooms. A lot of them are stuck to my car. The tree was beautiful while it lasted. I hope the birds nesting in the tree are safe, and I can see the hawks are busily taking care of their new babies.

Happy Birthday Anniversary

Happy birthday to Maddox Owen who will be 5 on April 24 and Crew Holden who will be 6 on April 25. Happy birthday to Marlene Lance on April 14. Carolyn Galloway and Hanna Whitesides also have April birthdays. We would like to wish Cora and Dan Roess a very happy 57th wedding anniversary on April 20. Congratulations and have many more.
