Sierra Club

In an effort to facilitate the City of Brevard and Transylvania County in the transition of government operations to renewable energy, the Pisgah Group of the North Carolina Sierra Club will present Amber Weaver, chief sustainability officer for the city of Asheville, as its April speaker.

Weaver will talk about her office’s work to help achieve the city’s carbon reduction plan goal and new efforts to engage with the community on clean renewable energy. The office also focuses on sustainability initiatives within all departments across the city to integrate sustainable design, technology, and practice into municipal operations, infrastructure and services. Future goals and aspirations for the office include achieving the city’s 80 percent carbon reduction goal, contribute to the Energy Innovation Task Force’s reduction in energy use by 17 MWs, exploring 100 percent renewable opportunities, and building a resilient community in the face of climate change.

Weaver has been with the city of Asheville’s Office of Sustainability since June 2015. Previously, she worked in Atlanta with Georgia State and local government applying principles of sustainability to generate environmental action and awareness. Weaver received her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia for environmental economics and management. Her expertise is in creating policy around the subjects of watershed protection, beautification, waste reduction and recycling, and sustainability.

The meeting will take place at the Unitarian Universalist church on the corner of South Broad and Varsity streets in Brevard on Thursday, April 25. The Sierra Club will gather at 7 p.m. to meet and greet. The meeting will actually start at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. Group leaders invite any interested members to meet with Weaver for dinner at 5:15 p.m. at Plaza Garibaldi on East Main Street in Brevard.
