After 33 hours, the search for Catawba County murder suspect Joseph Barker ended on Thursday with "a safe and quick resolution," and it was Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney himself who discovered Barker hiding in the woods.

Capt. Jeremy Queen, with the Sheriff's Office, said Mahoney made contact with Barker around 1:40 p.m., Thursday, between the Old Rosman Highway and the New Rosman Highway, just above the city limits of Rosman.

"Mahoney led his own team, and he went into the woods on his own with a couple of other team members and walked up on the suspect," Queen said.
