The swans were bought by Cora Roess from Ross Grocery in the 1950s and she displays them.

In The Bible Mission

The mission meets every Sunday morning at the Cathey's Creek Community Center starting at 10 a.m. with Sunday school/Bible study and preaching at 11 a.m. This past Sunday, Pastor Brian Hoxit brought the message. Visitors are always welcome. Reports tell me that the community center really looks great.

Cathey's Creek Baptist Church

AWANA has some exciting upcoming events. May 15 is AWANA Awards night. On May 22, they will have the water slide. On May 29, AWANA Grand Prix car kits will be available. They meet every Wednesday night at the church going along with the Transylvania school schedule.

Birthdays

Several birthdays were recognized: Bill Lance on May 3, Pauline Nicholson on May 4, Elaine Hamlin on May 9 and Pastor Tony Lambert on May 8. Wishing all a very happy birthday.

Prayers

Praying for those who are sick, Marlene Lance and Darla Owen. God was with Stanley Owen and grandchildren over the weekend. They were driving in his Jeep when an 18-wheeler hit his vehicle and knocked them into another car. Everyone was OK. Praise the Lord.

Going To The Store

Cora Roess sent information about Ross Grocery. It was located about half way around Ross Road next to where Mr. and Mrs. Ross lived. Ed and Lorene Ross took turns being in the store, Lorene mostly. They had a good variety of merchandise, coffee, flour, cornmeal, etc. Don't think they had refrigerated items except cold drinks. They had candy, chips and crackers. They owned a big dog that stayed around on the porch. She has no idea how long the store operated. She remembered one time she and her sister walked from their house around to the store and she bought two swans. She still has them. She can't remember what they cost but nearly nothing in today's economy. This would have been in the 50s.

The Window

Mothers have a built-in instinct to protect and take care of their young. Animals are very protective of their young also. Early Sunday morning I was checking on the hawks that are nesting nearby, it was raining and the mother was standing with her wings out trying to keep her young dry, she was struggling to try to get all of them under her wings, they are almost as big as she is. But she finally settled down, both parents take good care of them, feeding them all day.

Give 5 Read 5

Our hope is that each RES child will be able to take home at least five books to add to their personal libraries this year. Contact Crystal Whitman (RES instructional coach) at 862-4431 or email her at [email protected] for more information or to arrange for book pick-up. The collection goes until May 31.
