Last updated 5/14/2019 at 4:58pm

“With a Voice of Singing,” the Transylvania Choral Society Spring Concert will be presented on Sunday, May 19, at the Paul Porter Center on the Brevard College campus. The concert will begin at 4 p.m.

The 55-person chorus will be directed by David Gresham, D.M.A. Gresham is the artistic director of the Transylvania Choral Society. He is also associate professor of voice and choral music and director of choral activities at Brevard College and he is on the summer faculty at the Brevard Music Center.

Patricia Black will accompany the chorus. She holds a degree in musical performance from Northwestern University and Nationale de Musicque, France. She previously served as pianist for the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Chicago Lyric Opera and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. She is currently the keyboardist for both the Brevard and Hendersonville orchestras as well as accompanist for the TCS.

Gresham has chosen a program of folk music, mostly American but also with other antecedents. The chorus will be singing two Irish folk songs, “The Garten Mother’s Lullaby” and “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye.” There will be a modern piece from the West Indies written by Harry Belafonte and Robert Freeman, “Turn the World Around.”

American songs include a spiritual, “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel,” arranged by Ralph Hunter, and “Sure on This Shining Night,” the most famous of Samuel Barber’s works using the poem by James Agee.

Perhaps the highlight of the program will be five songs from Aaron Copeland’s collection, “Old American Songs.” His arrangements include the Shaker song, “Simple Gifts,” a lullaby, “The Little Horses,” “Zion’s Walls,” a hymn, “At the River,” and a rousing minstrel composition, “Ching-a-Ring Chaw.”

Cost for the program is $10 for open seating tickets. Tickets are available from TCS members, online at, and at the door.
