TNRC Tours Prescription Burns In DuPont, Donut Hole

Members of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council tour the area still off limits to the public at Lake DERA, which sits in the 'donut hole' in DuPont State Recreational Forest. There is no set timeline when it will be open to the public, but forest staff are working on mapping the area for potential uses like trails, beaches and parking, to name a few possibilities.

As one of many folks who live in Transylvania and Henderson counties who has watched this relative new state-owned forest take shape and grow, many of us have had concerns.

As a sportsman, will our wildlife and fisheries suffer from too many visitors, will resource management be a low priority or a lack of public understanding for those needs, be a factor?

As a paddler, can I still access some of the rivers and lakes with my boats? As a mountain biker, hiker or horseback rider, can I still ride many of my favorite trails and see new or improved trails built?
