In the 1950s and 1960s, Southern whites faced a moral test after the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregation in “Brown v. Board of Education” (1954).

Most failed.

Driven by fear and anger, the majority of white Southerners remained silent or embraced political rabble-rousers who railed against black Americans and those who supported civil rights as “communists,” “socialists” and “integrationists” who would destroy our sacred “Southern way of life.”

Today, we have a narcissistic grifter in the White House who is immensely more powerful than these predecess...
