The Journey Inward: Why You Can Have Pain, But No Suffering

Several years ago, my son and I experienced severe turbulence on a flight back from Florida. He was only 10 at the time and as the plane was rocking back and forth, he asked me: “Will the plane crash?” His question is common when people on airplanes go through turbulence.

Our thoughts are great at imagining catastrophe in the future. “I’m in my seat now. The warning light is not on, but will the plane hold up.” We conjure up a myriad of catastrophic thoughts. The main thought is: “If the plane crashes, I will die.”
