McGaha Chapel Singalong

By Charles Burden

From Brevard and Dunn’s Rock, from See Off Mountain and Caesar’s Head, and especially from Cedar Mountain, with a smattering of Raleigh and Atlanta tossed in, folks gathered at McGaha Chapel last Sunday afternoon to welcome “the Good Ole Summertime.” “The Happy Wanderer” and “On Top of Old Smokey” were favorites, but the most robust singing resulted from the sung “rounds.” Everybody loves rounds. Then, the Owings family topped off the afternoon with chilled, delicious Whistle Stop watermelons served just outside the chapel. If you missed it, don’t miss our next Chapel Singalong, Christmas Caroling, at McGaha at 2:30 p.m. on 1st Advent, Sunday, Dec. 2.

Christine’s Corner

By Christine Pace

Thanks to my niece, Patty Stahl, and her Cedar Mountain “history” segments I haven’t needed to add much to this weekly column. However, I have some new news to share this week. I now have a second dog, to go with 5-year-old Jack, my corgi/Chihuahua mix. After his other two mates passed, he was sure lonely when I wasn’t home, and even when I was home he was missing something. I looked at several adult dogs but had not found just the right one when I met a lady in South Carolina (I was attending a gourd show) who mentioned that she had three puppies and did I want to see them? I did. They were only 5 weeks old at the time, so I went home and talked it over with Jack, and, sure enough, three weeks later our little BoBo was brought to my home by a friend from South Carolina who came up to visit me and “do” the White Squirrel Festival. Expecting sleepless nights and days filled with numerous feedings and coddling of our new family member I was pleasantly surprised, and I am happy to announce that this new puppy is the easiest one I’ve ever had to acclimate. He fits right in, and, best of all, Jack took to him right away. It is so sweet to see them play and nap together. BoBo is crate trained now after only three days and sleeps the whole night through without a peep. Jack is so well-behaved that he is really helping me teach BoBo the ways of our home, including “Lets go outside” (to potty), followed shortly with “Let’s go inside.” He has learned “no” already and, of course, knows what it means when I ask if he wants a “treat.” BoBo’s heritage is a Malchi, which is a Maltese/Chihuahua mix– a real cute, friendly and smart little pup.

My really special news, though, is about my 18-year-old granddaughter Cassi Harris, who is a recent graduate of Connections Online Academy, with honors. She has also been attending Blue Ridge College the last three years. She was on the publicity committee of the college the past two years. This fall Cassi will begin college at Liberty University in Virginia, studying Bio-Medics (pre med) with a long-term goal, so far, to one day work overseas, where needed, in the medical field. Congratulations Cassi! This past Sunday, I attended her church in Brevard as it was “Senior Sunday” and 10 of the 12 graduating seniors were present and were honored. Cassi played a duet on her violin with her teacher of 13 years, Miss Charlotte. It was beautiful. She is beautiful. God bless all the graduating seniors in Cedar Mountain and Transylvania County!

This past Friday my 5-year-old grandson Cooper graduated from pre-school and will be entering kindergarten this fall. So, it will be back to painting for me. I plan to sell my art at a couple art shows this fall and then, hopefully, be part of an in-town art gallery as before, beginning the first of next year. It has been a wonderful five years babysitting my grandson, though, and, in many ways, I will miss it. He is brother to Cassi, and they have a sister too, Calla Harris, who will enter Brevard High School this August. Where has the time gone?

New pup, new directions and challenges, and same great Cedar Mountain friends. What could be better?

Now is the time to plan for this year’s “Mountain Gourd Gathering” to be held Aug. 8, 9 and 10. More on that coming up next week.

Birthdays

June began with Virgie Heath celebrating on June 1, and Aubrey Lawson on June 5. Marshall Duke (Missy’s hubby) will celebrate another year on June 11, with Paula Rogers Pace being celebrated on June 12. Paula is Joey Pace’s better half. Evie Rackley is turning a year older on June 14. John “Doug” Pace will gain a year too on June 22. Lenoir Bishop, who never seems to age, will gain a year June 23. Sharing the same birth “date” are Shelley Marcy and Natalie Warren Pace, wife of Adam Pace. Congratulations to all.

Anniversaries

Two couples share the same wedding date of June 11: Bobby and Lucy Jones and Allen and Nancy Cadora. Rick and Debbie Williams will celebrate another year on June 30. Congratulations and best wishes.

Around The House

By Linda Young

My mossery is growing larger. I rescued a large patch of moss on the edge of the “canyon” (drainage ditch) that runs along the edge of my yard. It was about to fall into the abyss. Then, I had to decide where to put it. So happens there is about a 2-foot strip in front of where my vehicle is parked between the deck and French drain that was mostly small rocks and weeds. The weeding was easy, but the rocks weren’t. I built a soil sifter a few years ago and used it to separate the rocks from the soil. It is a nice green area now instead of an eyesore. That means that I have an adjacent eyesore to fix on the other side of the French drain. I am enjoying this incredible weather. Hope you are, too. Others across the nation are not so fortunate. Please hold them in your hearts and prayers.

Your contributions are welcome. We’d love to hear what’s going on, if you would like to share. Email your news and photos to cedarmountainnews@gmail.com by Monday afternoon for the next two weeks.
