Little River Community

Yoga is here in Little River. We meet at the community center on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per class. Our instructor, Lauren, is fantastic and very caring about everyone’s level and ability.!

On June 8, a Mountain Music Monthly Birthday Jam will be held. A potluck dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. and followed by a music jam at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in, bring an instrument, a covered dish and your love for mountain music. Or, just come out to enjoy the music.

On June 20, a monthly potluck dinner, with speaker, will be held. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Rev. Louis E. Negron, the local United Way’s chief executive officer, will share his vision for United Way of Transylvania County followed by an open chat. Everyone’s welcome to join us, meet Louis and learn more about UWTC.

The book club meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., rotating at someone’s home in the Little River community. The last book was “The Same Kind of Different as Me,” which is a thought-provoking and emotional book based on a true story. Check out Little River’s Facebook page for the next book and meeting location.

The Community Playgroup meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. It is a mobile resource early childhood program in Transylvania County through collaboration between El Centro and The Family Place, with financial support from United Way. The Community Playgroups van comes to the Little River Community Center weekly, equipped with materials for parent/child activities, as well as snacks, recipes to share, and informative resources parents can take home. There is no charge to participate and no commitment to attend weekly. For more information, send a message to [email protected] or call (828) 556-1705.

The 4H Club will be on summer break until September. Write [email protected] for information about the autumn session.

One of the best views of the valley is the Little River Community Center at 191 Little River Church Road in Penrose. Follow the hill to the beautiful oak trees.

Thoughts To Share

I would like to thank our farmers here in the valley and throughout Transylvania. It seems to be floods or drought. Please know that your commitment to your land and growing vegetables to nourish our bodies is much appreciated. May your summer harvest be abundant and prosperous. Nice start to the summer months, eh? Our windows are open again followed by the heat on Memorial weekend. So, delighted to be greeted each morning, around 5:45 a.m., by the birds’ morning songs, once again. I am not a fan of AC but grateful for, and appreciate it, in the dogs days of summer. The last week has been like the old-fashioned summers in WNC. Hope it stays around for a while.
