The Transylvania Times -

Save Schenck

June 13, 2019

I would like to comment on the front page article entitled “Schenck Job Corps’ Future Remains Unclear,” published in The Transylvania Times on June 6.

Perhaps I can add to the ongoing conversation launched by the U.S. Forest Service when it said it will “withdraw” from operating the Job Corps.

A few years ago, I began volunteering as a tutor in English grammar, literature and creative writing.

Looking back, I can say my time at Schenck was a deeply meaningful time. Schenck caters to young people ages 16 to 24. I saw these young people blossom and succeed, perhaps for the first time in their lives.

Major health issues prevented me from continuing to volunteer at Schenck, but memories remain with me of courteous students who needed a “hand up, not a hand out.”

The proposed changes to Schenck Job Corps seem short-sighted. In the long run, maintaining the Job Corps saves money, but more important, it nurtures our young people, especially those who need extra help.

I urge the forces that be to save Schenck Job Corps, an already successful endeavor.
