On June 12, Telco Community Credit Union opened its ninth branch at 281 Asheville Highway in Brevard.
Telco was organized in 1935 to serve the employees of the Southern Bell Telephone System. Today, they are a community-chartered credit union serving Alexander, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Polk, Rutherford and Transylvania counties. Those who live, work, worship or attend school in these counties are eligible to become a Telco member. What’s the difference between a credit union and a bank? A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members and, unlike a bank, credit unions return their profits back to their members, according to a press release.
Telco offers a host of financial services such as: savings, free checking, business Accounts, CDs, IRAs, as well as low interest loans and credit cards. Not only are their rates competitive but they also offer mobile and online banking, iPay, direct deposit and remote check deposits, the release said.
Telco has a long history of, and continues to, engage in WNC communities with charitable services, the release said. Over $10,000 and countless man-hours are contributed to local charities and individuals annually. Here are a few ways Telco exemplifies, the release said, the credit union motto “People Helping People:”
•Offering support to individual members for heating bills, medical expenses, short term housing, school supplies and food collections.
•Providing Christmas gifts for children who otherwise would receive very little, if anything.
Donating to local charities, including Eblen Foundation, WNC Rescue Mission, Shriners, Fraternal Order of Police, Fire Fighters Associations, Community Centers, Health and Dental Ministry, Manna Food Bank, Hendersonville Homeless Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, The Back Pack Program and The Hope Chest.
