Missing Camp Girls Found A Day Later In Jackson County

July 4, 2019

The two teenaged girls reported missing from the Lake Toxaway area late Sunday night were found safe Monday evening in Jackson County.

Law enforcement officials found Gaby Caturano, 14, and Isabella Bianca, 15, around 8:30 p.m. in the mountain area above Wolf Creek Lake known as Horseshoe Rock, according to Transylvania County Chief Deputy Eddie Gunter.

The two were with the Trails Carolina Wilderness Camp when they went missing.

Gunter said the girls hiked for about 10 miles in the rugged terrain around the camp they left from in the nearly 24 hours they were missing.

“The girls were fine. They were exhausted from being out, doing all the Hiking without provisions. They were pretty spent when we caught them,” he said.

The Jackson County Sherriff’s Office, Lake Toxaway Fire Department, Transylvania County Emergency Management and canine teams from South Carolina were instrumental in helping the search effort, according to Gunter.

Gunter said the main leads in the search effort came from two women who saw pictures of Caturano and Bianca on news reports and called in their tips after recognizing the girls from earlier in the day.
