AAUW Book Sale Collects Record Amount – Brevard, NC

July 18, 2019

Once again, local residents and visitors demonstrated their support for the educational goals of girls and women in Transylvania County by purchasing more than 25,000 books to provide over $32,000 in AAUW scholarship funds.

The American Association of University Women is grateful to every person who came to the sale, who made a purchase, and who helped spread the word about AAUW’s mission to support academic success and leadership development for women and girls in the county’s colleges, high schools, and middle and elementary schools.

The 2019 sale was AAUW’s 50th Anniversary of the Book Sale and was dedicated to the memory of Carol Elliott, who was a key player in the success of the event for 11 years before her death in January 2019. This year’s sale raised more money and sold more books than in any of its previous 49 years of the annual event. While many people commented on the breadth of the effort to stage the annual sale, most are unaware of the actual person hours that go into making the book sale the largest and best in Western North Carolina, according to a press release.

The success of the 2019 sale is due to the following people and groups and AAUW thanks each one:

•The 100-plus volunteers who worked before, during and after the sale as greeters, cashiers, packers, and category organizers, giving more than 2,000 hours of service; and those who placed the yellow boxes at area sites and monitored them from January through June.

•The family members and friends of AAUW members who gave physical labor and helped with publicity and administrative tasks throughout the week.
