The construction of the Cook Out fast food restaurant on the Asheville Highway in Brevard is underway and is expected to be completed this fall.

The 3,285-square-foot restaurant will seat 56 people. The restaurant is known for its hot dogs, hamburgers and milkshakes.

"(The restaurant) is within the Brevard Place planned development district, which is the same district as Bojangles and the (future) Holiday Inn Express," said Paul Ray, the interim city planning director. "The retail shops will get started soon, and that will include a Starbucks and an AT&T store."

He added that there are conditions agreed upon between the developers and the city involving the pouring of sidewalks within the district along Asheville Highway.

"The retention pond parcel back near Hendersonville Highway will have a sidewalk too, so slowly we are completing our pedestrian infrastructure," Ray said. "Sometimes, when people look at the bits and pieces of these projects, it doesn't make any sense, but there is a rhyme and reason, and it will all come together."

The McDonald's restaurant opposite the Cook Out remains permitted for demolition, and that permit is "good for a year."

Ray said, though it was scheduled to be demolished earlier this year, the restaurant is still scheduled for demolition for the construction of a new restaurant.
