Given the circuitous route he took to reach his current positions in the world of classical music, Ken Lam, the current resident conductor at the Brevard Music Center, has a rather unique perspective.

Lam was born in Hong Kong. Since there is not much space for sports in the compact city, most children, including Lam, learned to play musical instruments.

"It's like sports. It's very competitive," said Lam, who began studying piano and violin when he was 3.
