Black walnuts are popular trees, grown commercially for lumber or the edible nut.

It also makes a good shade tree in the yard and many can be seen around town.

But, beware, black walnut trees can be killers. They aren’t dangerous to people of course, but their ability to damage and kill plants around them is known as black walnut toxicity.

The black walnut tree produces a toxic substance called juglone.

Although it is found in all parts of the tree, the highest concentration is in the root system and the hulls.
