We Can Do Better

Back in the days when I was in college (stone tablets and hieroglyphics), I took a course in philosophy. A section in that course dealt with rules of debate. I learned that debaters, when bereft of valid, supportive materials or facts, often resorted to such diversionary tactics as ad hominem attacks, argumentum ad absurdum, and the like. None of these tactics was considered effective and, in fact, undermined the position of the debater using them.

I find it interesting, in Monday’s Transylvania Times, that two writers resorted to such tactics. Whether in defense of the 45th president,...
