Change Two Lives

When children think of summer, it is full of family trips, attending camp, sleeping late, play dates, swimming and just relaxing. Summer is also the time that children’s academic skills often regress, sometimes called the “summer slide.” If there is little opportunity or structure to read, literacy skills frequently decline.

Volunteer literacy tutoring is a huge part of my summer months. Assisting students who struggle with reading and the writing process benefits both the student and the tutor. Students not only maintain skills, but gain momentum in the literacy process. They deve...
