John Frank Gabcik, 76, of Brevard, died Aug. 2, 2019, at his home of 13 years in Connestee Falls.

He was born April 17, 1943, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Mary Rose Lathrop and Frank Gabcik.

He worked as a high school English teacher, a financial planner, an addiction counselor and for his library’s used books store.

He was a part of the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County; a member of the Knights of Columbus, North Carolina; a friend and member of the library; and a former docent of the Carl Sandburg house.

He enjoyed writing biographies and game stories, concentrating on underappreciated White Sox players and personalities for Sabr.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Larry Gabcik; his uncles, William Lathrop and Louis Gabcik; his aunt, Annie Gabcik; and cousins, George Wilkens, Mike and Judy Vrettos and Ted and Joan Kay.

Survivors include his wife, Edwina Gabcik; his son, Joseph, and daughter-in-love, Nicole Gabcik.

The greatest joy in the celebration of his life is that he and Edwina celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past April.

A service was held Monday, Aug. 12, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County. Earle Rabb officiated.

Memorials may be made to the United Universalists of Transylvania County or to The Haven of Brevard.
