In a Volkswagen Beetle, they pulled off the freeway onto a road taking them in the direction of culminating change – a brief pivot in Western Civilization – and severe gridlock.

Fifty years ago, Aug. 15-18, the Woodstock music festival was billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music," and was planned for a maximum of 200,000 attendees, with tickets at $18 in advance and $24 at the door, but when festival-goers began arriving by the tens of thousands on Aug. 13, organizers could not hold back the tide, and it became a free event.
