Susan Brown played the fiddle, Cindy Carpenter strummed the banjo and Elizabeth Galloway picked the guitar while Tommy Anderson kept the bass beat last Thursday when the East Fork Gals played before a full house at the Dunn's Rock Community Center.

Winged Visitor

Friday afternoon, I glanced out our back window, when something large and white on Dunn's Creek caught my eye. It looked to be about the size of an American Pekin duck, but there was no head visible. The creature was hunkering down in the rain on the end of a dead rhododendron branch. When the downpour stopped, it slowly lifted its head revealing a thin elegant neck and a long orange beak. I'd never seen a great egret on our section of Dunn's Creek before.

When the bird hopped from the branch to the water and began walking toward the store, I hurried over to alert the folks...
