Lake Toxaway Charities: Giving Since 1975 – Transylvania County, NC

Cliff and Georganne Williams attended the fundraiser. Cliff Williams, the AC/DC bassist, also donated guitars for an auction.

Lake Toxaway Charities (LTC) has been a viable part of Lake Toxaway Estates since 1975 when seasonal residents began hosting an annual golf tournament to raise money for the local EMS/Fire Department.

Subsequent donations helped build the Toxaway Community Center and continued supporting the volunteer fire department, which at that time received no county funds.

This was the forerunner of today's annual Lake Toxaway Charities Sports Day and Gala Dinner Dance hosted at the Lake Toxaway Country Club. This event, now featuring tournaments for croquet, golf and tennis, currently involves over 300 participants and 100 volunteers and provides the community the opportunity to 'give back' to those in need in Transylvania County.

In 2004, two Lake Toxaway residents each contributed $5,000, matched by The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, creating an endowment fund managed under the umbrella of the Transylvania Endowment. As LTC's outreach expanded, recipients were grouped into categories: "abused, disabled and indigent" to include agencies like SAFE, Mobile Meals and The Children's Center; "medical assistance," such as Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic and Four Seasons Hospice; "educational and scholar-ships" focused on organizations like Free Rein and Rise; Shine; and "other," such as the Cindy Platt Boys; Girls Club and the Special Olympics of Transylvania County.

In the past 13 years, LTC has donated over $2.5 million to 45 Transylvania County charities with more than $330,000 distributed in 2018.

This is a testament to the generosity of Lake Toxaway Estates residents, who care deeply about the greater community in which they live, whether seasonally or full-time.

This year's Sports Day and Gala, held July 20, raised $526,547, a 60 percent increase over the record-setting $329,000 raised in 2018.

The dinner dance with its lively "A Night on Broadway" theme exceeded previous attendance with 330 energetic, costumed guests. Both the silent and live auctions generated excitement and dollars, and there actually was a "polite bidding war" for a guitar signed by Cliff Williams, a resident and bass guitarist for the Grammy Award winning rock group AC/DC.

The bidding was so intense that Williams donated two more guitars, generating $60,000 in donations for Lake Toxaway Charities.

"One hundred percent of every dollar contributed is dedicated to making a difference in the daily lives of so many Transylvania Country residents through the 45 charities we serve," said Chip Brown, co-chair of Lake Toxaway Charities. "We have no administrative costs as our committee members are all volunteers. Our charity supports the hungry, the homeless, abused women and children, those who cannot afford medical and dental care and the less fortunate in our county. Grant applications from qualified agencies are completed in March and funds are distributed in June each year."

"The Sound of Music" influenced this group at the fundraiser.

Salley Stepp, director of SAFE, Inc., said LTC is a lifeline for the organization. "(LTC) is how we fund our shelter, Stacey's House," Stepp said. "Without LTC grant money, we would be unable to keep the shelter operating efficiently. (LTC) also helps provide security for the shelter. It costs $40,000 each year to maintain the privacy gate and cameras that surround the property. This is critical to providing safety for our clients, and we are so thankful to Lake Toxaway Charities for their financial support."

Lake Toxaway Charities began a new volunteer program this summer. It is designed to encourage residents, both seasonal and full time, to offer their time and skills to work side by side with the staff and clients of the agencies it serves in Transylvania County. Many are active already, serving on boards, tutoring children in area schools and working with local community centers.
