Friends Group Gears Up For Library's Annual Book Sale – Brevard, NC

September 2, 2019

Over the course of his remarkable life, Albert Einstein made many startling discoveries and profound pronouncements. In fact, in one declaration he provided the key to true enlightenment, saying: “The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.”

Capitalizing on that sage advice, the Friends of the Library (FOL) suggests that come next month, the only thing you absolutely have to know is that the Transylvania County Library’s annual book sale will be held Oct. 4-11. But before the doors of the Rogow Room at the library open for this much anticipated event, a lot of work must be done, work that relies on a mini-army of volunteers.

“This is our premier fund-raising event for the year,” said Tia Ramsey, president of the FOL board. “Our organization is blessed with a large group of committed volunteers, many of whom sign on to help year after year. But that doesn’t mean we don’t need some additional helping hands.”

Volunteers are engaged in a variety of activities that are critical to the success of a book sale as large as this one, ranging from meticulously organizing the thousands of books, CDs, DVDs and other materials available for sale to manning the sales stations and assisting patrons. More than 1,600 hours are typically clocked in by volunteers before, during and after the sale.

The FOL board has already put in considerable time and effort in the preplanning work necessary to orchestrate this multi-day sale, laying out a detailed organizational road map and timeline to assure a smooth process.

“This will be my first book sale since coming on board and I am certainly looking forward to it,” said Rishara Finsel, director of the Transylvania County Library. “And, I’ve already heard a lot about how much the community comes out to support this event and how very important the dedicated work of all the volunteers is to our Friends group.”

At last year’s sale, one of the volunteers overheard an out-of-town shopper said, “I make it a point to come to this sale every year when I am visiting Brevard. It’s more than the great deals on books. It makes me feel like I am part of this wonderful community.”

If you would like to join the wonderful community of book sale volunteers, right now is the time to sign up. And you can do that by stopping by the main information desk at the library.

“Along with the hard work, we’ve found that our volunteers also enjoy a lot of camaraderie and fun while putting in their hours,” said Ramsey. “So, in calling out for more volunteers I guess you could say it is a case of the more, the merrier.”

Last year’s book sale brought in more than $14,000.

“This money provides the necessary financial resources to guarantee that the FOL can continue to offer the full range of free programming and activities that our community has come to expect and enjoy through its library,” Ramsey said.

The core mission of the Friends organization is to enhance Transylvania County Library services by underwriting such programs as the Summer Concert Series, Bag Lunch Arts Program, the youth summer reading program and many other family oriented programs.

Additional information on the upcoming book sale will be provided in a follow-up article. Persons interested in joining the Friends of the Library can also do that at the main information desk at the library.
