Dunn's Rock's History

People strolling along Brevard's downtown sidewalks might be surprised to learn that at the time of the county's founding in 1861, the area's greatest population centers were in Davidson River, Cathey's Creek and Dunn's Rock. Cautioned by the experience of Henderson County, where the 1838 selection of a county seat was met with extreme disagreement and violence, county founders decided against choosing one of these population centers as a setting for the courthouse. Instead it would be built at a location no further than three miles from Gash's Store on Probart Street...
