SCORE Holds Workshop On Managing Nonprofit Boards

September 26, 2019

Sixty representatives from nonprofit organizations in Transylvania and Polk counties attended SCORE’s workshop on Sept. 18 to discuss what legal matters the board of directors should know and how an effective board achieves its organizational goals.

Lawyer Sabrina Presnell Rockoff of McGuire, Wood & Bissette and Rebekah Lowe, principal of FizzyWork Executive Coaching, led the two-hour long discussion on topics ranging from rules that govern board of directors operations to best practices in selecting board members and conducting board meetings.

The Brevard SCORE branch, led by Manager Tom Sweeny and six SCORE mentors, partnered with the Brevard/ Transylvania Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Transylvania County and the Small Business Center of Blue Ridge Community College in sponsoring this workshop.

This workshop was the third session of Brevard SCORE’s Business Tune-Up Series designed to help small businesses and nonprofits improve their performance and maximize impact. The first one was Tuning Up Your Human Resources, facilitated by Sabrina Presnell Rockoff and held at the Blue Ridge Community College. The second, Tuning Up Your Money, was held at the United Community Bank in Straus Park and featured local accountant Claudia Hawkins as the discussion leader.

Brevard is one of the three branches of the WNC SCORE Chapter that offers its primary services of mentoring and training to small businesses and entrepreneurs in Transyl-vania, Henderson and Polk counties.
