Appalled By Treatment Of Erickson

Last updated 10/2/2019 at 5:28pm

I am writing this letter because I am absolutely appalled by the treatment of Erica Erickson and Pisgah Paws by the Brevard Police, Transylvania County Animal Control, and the Transylvania County government.

Erickson founded Pisgah Paws, a nonprofit animal rescue, in 2017 to help reduce the euthanasia of animals at the Transylvania Shelter. In 2018, Paws rescued 271 animals from the Transylvania Shelter, all of which would have otherwise been killed. Erickson opened the Cat Café this year to help rescue and rehome more animals and to provide the community with a unique cat adoption center.

Erickson’s efforts and passion have inspired hundreds of people in the community to step up and volunteer as cleaning staff and other workers at the Cat Café and Pisgah Paws. Volunteers come in a minimum of twice per day to clean the cat room and feed the cats. I know because I am one of them. I am there nearly every day to manage the volunteers. Anyone who says the cats are not properly cared for or that the cat room is not cleaned frequently is wrong.

Not once have Erickson’s efforts been recognized by the shelter or any agencies in Transylvania County, while the shelter has bragged about its excellent live release rate that has improved dramatically over the past two years. Instead, Erickson has been continually harassed by Animal Control, had her personal home subjected to numerous surprise inspections, with no citations issued, had her Cat Café raided by the Brevard Police, with no charges being issued, and her rescue is now banned from the shelter while they “investigate” her further.

Pisgah Paws and the Cat Café are fantastic resources for shelter pets at risk of euthanasia in this community and it’s about time that this nonprofit rescue gets the respect and appreciation that it most certainly deserves. If you have any doubts about the quality of care the animals receive at this rescue, stop in and see us. Who knows, you might leave with your new best friend.
