On Saturday, the Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest held the 2019 Forest Festival, where visitors gathered to watch the Woodsman Meet, a lumberjack skill competition, and to see old-time crafters and musicians share their talents.

In 1908, chief forester Carl Schenck hosted the first Forest Fair to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Biltmore Forest School, the first of its kind in the United States.

Schenck's fair was designed to showcase the science-based forest management methods he was using at the time to other foresters, timber companies and the public.
