On a recent warm Saturday in October, during the DAR National Day of Service, four members of the Waightstill Avery Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution met with the president of the Board of Trustees of the Davidson River Cemetery, Tim Ballard, who had agreed to educate the women on gravestone preservation.

To the casual observer, their mission seemed straightforward – clean the aging gravestones of one section of the cemetery. However, the reality was much more complicated.
