The recent controversy over Facebook accepting political ads that perpetuate falsehoods has brought forth numerous questions regarding the First Amendment and lying.

Based on several comments we have read and heard, some people believe they can say anything, regardless of its veracity, and that publishers are illegally discriminating against them if they do not publish their comments. That is not true. Private businesses can restrict what they publish for any reason, and most do not publish lies because they want to avoid lawsuits.
